✍🏼 George W. Merkle’s 1959 Resignation Letter

Introduction In November 1959, my grandfather, George W. Merkle, made the difficult decision to resign his seat as City Commissioner of Springfield, Ohio. His term was not yet finished, but an election had just reshaped the City Commission, and George believed it would be unfair for outgoing members to make major policy decisions that would affect the city’s future. His letter, written on his office typewriter and addressed to the City Commission, reveals his humility, clarity, and deep respect for civic duty. It’s a snapshot of the same integrity that defined both his public service and his personal life. Transcription (Original formatting and punctuation preserved) City Commission Springfield, Ohio November 9, 1959 Gentlemen: Last Tuesday’s election created a personal dilemma to me, having, in my judgment, a serious effect on the future welfare of the citizens of Springfield and the most useful present functioning of the City Commission. The Commission bears a heavy responsibility ...

Family Lore, the Merkle Bible, and the Story of Migration In a letter dated February 21, 1977, my grandfather, George W. Merkle, wrote to my parents about a bit of family history: “I had the story on Grandpa Merkle slightly wrong. After having served a hitch in the Kaiser Wilhelm’s army he was invited to join up for a second helping. This didn’t go well with Grandpa and this is when he headed for America (1884).” George was writing about his grandfather — my great-great-grandfather Karl Johannes Merkle. The story was intriguing, but the timeline didn’t add up. Merkle family Bible Checking the Family Bible I am fortunate to have inherited the Merkle Family Bible, kept first by Karl’s wife, Caroline Louise (née Maier), and later by their children. The Bible records their marriage on June 1, 1869 in Marion, Ohio, and the births of their eight children, beginning with Wilhelmine Magdalena in January 1870. It also contains a short reflective note written in German: “The father, after...

My Grandmother, Grace Bowman, and Her Nontraditional Path This post is the first in a four-part series about my grandmother, Grace Bowman. Her story, intertwined with those of her parents and grandparents, reveals the resilience, reinvention, and migration that defined the Bowman family. Grace Louise Bowman was born on May 3, 1908, in Victor, Iowa, the eldest of five children of Oliver Jacob “O.J.” Bowman and Alice Evelyn “Allie” Rossman. She grew up in the Bowman House, surrounded by her siblings Tom, Alyce, Allyn (who died in infancy), and George. My Grandmother, Grace Bowman From the beginning, Grace’s life did not follow the well-worn path expected of young women in small-town Iowa. Education and Early Dreams Grace attended Victor High School from 1922–1926, where she shone in athletics and school activities. After graduation, she set her sights beyond Iowa, enrolling at the Chicago Normal School of Physical Education (1926–1928). There she played basketball, trained to become a ph...
