🌹 Was There a 4th Fiancé?
The Mystery of the Fraternity Pins
🔎At a Glance
Timeframe: 1930s
Place: Springfield, Ohio (Wittenberg University years)
Grace’s Role: College student, sorority sister, athlete
Family Lore: “Three engagements, three rings sent back.”
The Question: Do the fraternity pins suggest a fourth romance?
The Hidden Side of Grace
After Grace Bowman's death in 1984, her children unearthed a hidden past, discovering a life far more adventurous than she had ever revealed. Beyond her education in Chicago, her professional life in Louisiana, and even her broken engagements, further mysteries emerged from small objects tucked away in drawers. Among these were fraternity pins, sparking new questions about her untold story.
The Pins
Alongside her Kappa Delta sorority pin from Wittenberg University, two other fraternity pins turned up:
Sigma Alpha Epsilon (a national social fraternity)
Sigma Tau (an engineering honor society)
Neither fraternity had a chapter at Wittenberg University. Which raises the question: how did Grace acquire them?
What They Might Mean
In college tradition, a fraternity pin was often given as a romantic pledge, a precursor to an engagement ring. A woman who wore a man’s pin was seen as “pinned,” signaling commitment.
So what do these pins tell us about Grace?
Possibilities include:
They were given by a man she dated at a nearby college, where these fraternities had chapters.
They belonged to one of her earlier fiancés from Iowa, Chicago, or Louisiana, and she kept them with her sorority pin.
They could have been mementos passed among friends — though the tradition usually suggests something more intimate.
The Pattern of Reinvention
Family lore has always insisted that Grace was engaged three times before marrying George Merkle. The pins open the door to a tantalizing possibility: was there actually a fourth serious beau?
If so, Grace seems to have left behind no letters, photos, or announcements to confirm it. Like so much of her early life, this mystery lingers in half-secrets, small clues, and unanswered questions.
Why It Matters
Family history comes alive not just through records and family group sheets, but in the quiet moments, the treasured mementos, and the stories family members finally reveal after someone has passed. These pins totally capture that feeling.
For Grace, the pins may have symbolized her restless spirit in the 1920s and 30s — a willingness to explore love, opportunity, and reinvention before settling into the life her children knew.
Question
So, was there a fourth fiancé? Or were the fraternity pins simply souvenirs of friendships never revealed?
Either way, they add another layer to the portrait of Grace Bowman — modern, adventurous, and always a little mysterious.
