Family Lore, the Merkle Bible, and the Story of Migration In a letter dated February 21, 1977, my grandfather, George W. Merkle, wrote to my parents about a bit of family history: “I had the story on Grandpa Merkle slightly wrong. After having served a hitch in the Kaiser Wilhelm’s army he was invited to join up for a second helping. This didn’t go well with Grandpa and this is when he headed for America (1884).” George was writing about his grandfather — my great-great-grandfather Karl Johannes Merkle. The story was intriguing, but the timeline didn’t add up. My Grandmother, Grace Bowman, and Her Nontraditional Path This post is the first in a four-part series about my grandmother, Grace Bowman. Her story, intertwined with those of her parents and grandparents, reveals the resilience, reinvention, and migration that defined the Bowman family. Grace Louise Bowman was born on May 3, 1908, in Victor, Iowa, the eldest of five children of Oliver Jacob “O.J.” Bowman and Alice Evelyn “Allie” Rossman.
