🔎Finding Grandma Merkle in Old Photos

Caroline Maier Merkle through the years

Years ago, a cousin sent me the photograph at the bottom left. It was my great-great-grandmother Caroline (Maier) Merkle, taken in 1931, the year she died. Seeing her face clearly for the first time gave me a way to look back through the unlabeled photos in the old family Bible and other collections.

The shape of her mouth became my main clue, along with the probable dates of the images. Born in 1844, Caroline appears in the photograph from the Merkle Family Bible as a young woman likely in her twenties. The image’s details, her hairstyle and the cut of her dress,  suggest it was taken in the 1860s.

Using clothing hints again, the photo on the bottom right seems to have been taken between 1915 and 1919. Caroline would have been in her seventies then. The young boy beside her looks about ten years old, possibly one of her grandsons.

Although I may never know for certain, I believe these three images capture Caroline at different stages of her life. Her evolution from a determined young woman in Württemberg to a grandmother in Marion, Ohio.
